Children’s Therapeutic Services

Our Children’s Therapeutic Services directly support those aged between 4 and 12 years, who have been adversely affected by difficult life experiences. The service takes an early intervention approach, which among other benefits, hopes to prevent issues escalating for a family.

Therapy takes place within local school and nursery settings in the Govan area. This delivery model aims to make social and emotional wellbeing and mental health an accepted part of everyday life. Families can access this service within their local community, preventing the need for travel and allowing easier access to support as well as reducing stigma around mental health.

Our outcomes are:

  • To improve relationships between family members and with peers.

  • To make school and nursery a more positive experience.

  • To help children develop inner resources to deal with life’s challenges.

Play Therapy helps children in a variety of ways, we offer both individual and group work support. Children receive emotional support and can learn to understand more about their own feelings and thoughts. Sometimes, as the words can be hard to find, they may re-enact or play out traumatic or difficult life experiences in order to make sense of their past and cope better with their future. Play Therapy process and practice recognises the importance of understanding the child’s world and perspective, providing a therapeutic service for children that promotes growth, development and positive change.

Our service is integrated within three local primary schools – Riverside, St Saviour’s and Pirie Park – and two nurseries – Broomloan Nursery and Govan Family Learning Centre. The service is delivered by Aileen MacLeod, Senior Play Therapist, and Kate Currie, Play Therapist, who provide a combination of individual and group therapy sessions for children aged 3+, as well as support, advice and guidance to parents and carers.
